Fiddler on the Roof by Joseph Stein is a dramatic musical with lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and music by Jerry Bock. The scene is a village in Imperial Russia in 1905. The story centres on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain tradition as outside influences encroach upon the family. Tevye’s three strong-willed older daughters wish to marry for love. Each one's choice of a husband moves further away from their Jewish customs of having a marriage arranged by the village matchmaker. Adding another dimension of stress to Tevye’s life is the recent edict of the Tsar to evict the Jews from their village.
